It is a great pleasure for me that the Asahi Shimbun has been instrumental in bringing about this first loan exhibition from Japan of Japanese swords to the new Japanese Gallery at the British Museum. It was following the opening of the loan exhibition of Ukiyoe art from the British Museum's collection in Tokyo in 1985 that Sir David Wilson, the Director, formerly requested the continuing co-operation of the Asahi Shimbun in order to build the new Japanese Gallery. At the time it was agreed that a number of exhibitions should be held in Japan as part of the programme of co-operation, starting with Masterpieces of Chinese and Japanese Art in the British Museum which was held at four major cities in 1987. In continuation, Treasures of the British Museum will tour Tokyo, Yamaguchi and Osaka between October 1990 and May 1991. It is a great honour to me that the Asahi Shimbun has been able to co-operate in this way towards the promotion of cultural exchange between Japan and England.
This exhibition, Swords of the Samurai, will introduce the unique art form of the finely polished Japanese sword showing the development from the ancient straight blades introduced from China and Korea to the finally perfected curved Japanese sword. It is my special hope that the many people who visit the gallery will understand and enjoy this highly spiritual aspect of Japanese culture.
Finally I should like to thank the sword specialists who planned this exhibition ? Victor Harris of the British Museum and his friend Nobulo Ogasawara, Keeper of Swords at the Tokyo National Museum, who spared no efforts in his support ? the personnel of the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords, the Agency for Cultural Affairs of the Japanese Government, the many owners of the exhibits, and those institutions who have provided financial assistance, having recognised the value of such an exhibition - the Toshiba International Foundation and Japan Airlines ? together with all other persons who have helped in some way.
